Team Formats

Future City is open to students in grades 6th, 7th, and 8th who are from the same organization or from a home school environment. At the Regional Competitions and National Finals, a “team” is defined as the three presenting students, the educator, and the mentor. Before attending the competition, review the following formats and decide what works best for you.

1.   Single team from one organization

  • This team is made up of 3 students, an educator, and a engineer mentor.

2.   Multiple teams from one organization

  • Organizations can form as many teams as they'd like - all under the one $25.00 registration fee.
  • Meet with all of your students to discuss the overall program.
  • Organize the students into teams of three. Students can self-select or you can assign teams.
  • Recruit an engineer mentor and coordinate a schedule. It is recommended that each team have an engineer mentor for guidance, but one engineer can serve as a mentor for several teams.
  • Check with your Regional Coordinator for the maximum number of teams each organization can bring to the Regional Competition.
  • Only one team from each top scoring organization can advance to the final round of the Regional Competition.

3.   Large group effort

  • A team can be made up of a large group of students.
  • Meet with all of your students to discuss the overall program and explain that it will be a group effort to complete the project.
  • Organize students into working groups. Students can either self-select or you can assign them to a working group. One option is to organize the groups around different program components (e.g., the virtual city design group, the research essay group, etc.).
  • Identify three presenters. These three students will be the “official student presenters” at both the Regional and National Competitions and need to be registered as such.
  • Recruit your engineer mentor and coordinate a schedule with him/her. When selecting an engineer mentor, remember to tell him/her that they will be working with many different students throughout the course of the event. You may also want to recruit several engineer mentors so you have one mentor per group.
